If you have never heard of audiobooks before, audiobooks are generally voice recordings of the text of a book that you listen to rather than read. They can be downloaded onto your computer or phone and played on all sorts of mediums that support digital music files. You can use home stereo systems that support bluetooth or music from your phone and connect them, you can use car stereo systems in your cars, or just use headphones with your phone.
Well first, for me, books in general helped make me love myself and my life again. Or perhaps maybe for the first time in my life. They challenged all of my perspectives, and promoted growth in ways I hadn’t even realized I needed it. They have humbled me, and continue to broaden my mind every single page I read (or time I listen). I don’t mean fiction story-type books, although I think those are also powerful and expressive in their own ways, but for me the self-improvement type books, they will change so many parts of you – in so many incredible ways – if you let them.
Now when I recommend books to people I often get “oh… well I don’t really read…”, whereas I always come back with “Have you ever tried audiobooks?”. The answer is almost always no! And well if you know me, you know I get excited at any chance to give someone new information.
So we all know we live busy lives, finding time to sit down and read would be considered a luxury, right? Maybe not a luxury if you are one of those people that avoid books like the plague (probably from the forced reading you have had to do in highschool, been there). But here’s the thing – audiobooks allow you to listen to the book, while you continue doing other things (that don’t require a ton of thought) and give you NO excuse for not dedicating more of your life to expanding your mind through written word. You don’t need to sit in good lighting, you don’t need to sit at all in fact. You can find tons of small moments within your day to play them here and there. You can play them while you drive to work (or anywhere else), in the bathtub, in the shower, brushing your teeth, washing your face, on the toilet while you’re hiding from your kids (I know I’m not the only one), while the kids play at the park perhaps, while you make dinner, while you run, while you clean, during lunch, during work depending on your job (my husband listens while he works around the property on the tractor). Has that sparked an interest yet?
There are so many small moments within the day that add up! You could accomplish multiple book “readings” a month if you wanted! Rather than mindlessly scrolling through social media posts during every bit of downtime, click up your audiobook app and listen. My husband Johnny races motorcycles professionally across the country and we own and operate a motorcycle training school that travels over the summer. We accumulate far too many hours on the road and both my husband and I agree that audiobooks changed our whole experience. I can’t read in cars without getting car sick so it’s my way of feeling like I’m truly accomplishing something valuable. Investing in my mind. It’s an amazing alternative to music when you’ve already been driving for hours and are over the songs you’re hearing. Also helps the driver drown out the wild yelling children while they drive. And I have to admit that having a husband who values his mind too, so attractive! 😉
So maybe you’re starting to think this sounds really cool, but don’t know what to read? Just consider one area you really would love to improve on. Perhaps it’s forgiveness, jealousy, grief, self-esteem, budgeting, creativity, productivity – whatever it may be that you recognize a need for growth in yourself. Then go on Amazon (or Audible, they are connected) search those types of books, see what other people are saying in the reviews, and choose the first one that speaks to you – purchase it and just start listening.
So audiobooks are generally purchased online through Audible.com, or Amazon. They offer a free trial where you get 2 free audiobooks just to sign up. (click here to sign up to get 2 free audiobooks)
Disclaimer* I sought out their affiliate program when writing this post and basically if you’re interested and sign up through my link they’ll shoot me a couple dollars for sending you their way. So you’d get 2 free books either way while indirectly helping me support my family and blog in the process, win-win for both of us!
They do make you enter your credit card information to sign up so if you don’t want to continue your membership you need to remember to cancel your account after you use your 2 credits!! The books will be yours to forever keep BUT from what I understand they cancel credits if you cancel your account. So use them up first either way! If you choose to keep your account it’s $14.95 a month and they give you 1 credit per month, which is essentially 1 book per month for that price. You also get 30% off other books and there’s tons of sale for members. The price off books is the reason I’ve kept my account. You can cancel at any time though.
Another reason I actually love Audible is that they offer what they call their ‘Great Listen Guarantee’ to people who have memberships. You get the opportunity to return or exchange any audiobook if you aren’t happy with it, within a year of buying it. How awesome is that? I value this part considering last month I accidentally bought the meditation version of a book I wanted instead of the actual novel, easy peasy they just refunded me super quick and easy online.
Added tip 😉 – in the past when I’ve needed to cancel at times because of low income I found that every time I would go to cancel they would offer me 3 months at a discounted rate. I’m not positive if they still do this however it’s something to keep in mind if you really love the free audiobooks but can’t quite afford the $14.95 each month. This way you may be able to get 3 more credits for an even lower price before you cancel. Worth a shot!
If Audible sounds like it’s right up your alley, here is my best recommendation right now:
I listened to it just prior to starting my blog and it was seriously exactly what I needed to understand my mixed emotions and push through my vulnerabilities when it comes to putting myself out there. She discusses authenticity so well and reminds us of how we compromise ours regularly. Another area I feel strongly about – especially with my blog – to always be authentic in how I speak and with what I promote and how I impact others.
She’s also hilarious and real. I swear she was speaking right to me sometimes where I caught myself laughing out loud as she was discussing scenarios, and her description of typical reactions were 100% accurate. This book was slightly different than most in the sense that it was recorded from what I would assume was a motivational summit or something. There isn’t a paperback book for it, she just freely talked and I loved it. It sounds like a motivation speech mixed with a comedy show. I highly highly recommend it. For both men and women of any age in any part of their life!
I hope this was helpful! I truly believe in the power of perspective and books are an incredible source of perspective.
Put in the work. Your mind and heart will thank you, and every person you impact will too.
